I'm a 30 FTM with a baby girl due 2/13/16. really excited and nervous to meet my lil mama. I've been wearing locs since my college years, maybe about 6 or 7 years. one of my friends thought that I was going to have a boy simply because she couldn't see me with a girl because "I don't like doing hair" so when I told her that I'm expecting a girl she was happy and shocked and than said "please don't put locs in her hair" I was like hm funny since I actually thought of that, but not a serious thought, it was just a passing thought. but I was curious as to why she was so adamant on saying that? i don't even know if I could even do that since my daughter is biracial so I'm not sure how her hair texture would turn out but is it a bad idea to do so? any of you mamas loc your children's hair? did you wait until they could talk and understand the process and the responsibility of keeping up with locs? I have had locs for 6 yrs and I love kids with locs. I have a son that will be 2 dec 7 I haven’t locked his hair because He is not ready for the upkeep and would roll in the grass or get it dirty but one day maybe if he asked. I have locs but wouldn’t lock my kids hair. Only because should they decide they no longer want them when they’re older it’s not a simple process to remove them. They would either have to shave their head or spend days/weeks picking them out. I wouldn’t want them to have to do that based on a decision I made. my mom was going to loc my hair when i was younger but she decided not to and let me choose to do it on my own and i've been loc'd for 2 years now . im due in March and i'm having a girl & I'm personally gonna let my baby girl decide what she wants but it's none of your friend's business what you do w your baby girls hair �� , if that's what you want then do it ! and just bc you have locs doesn't mean you don't do you hair . we do upkeep all the same �� I seriously thought about starting locs before I went into labor, I think it would be dope to loc her hair I'm always on the fence with this issue. I love locs and wish my hair could easily loc but my texture is so soft that it requires more time than I'm willing to invest to get them started. However, whenever I think about this subject I think a child should choose if they want their hair loc'd. Then I have a change of mind and think to myself that's our natural hair state if we didn't manipulate it in any way so why not loc their hair. I always go back and forth. I do hair for a living. I have a salon in my house and me, my husband,and my 10 year old girl and 5 year old boy is locked. They wanted locs and my daughter definitely understands them but I’m not sure about someone who doesn’t do hair. I teach my children about hair and live natural hair and locs everyday so it’s a part of their life. I also don’t force it on them. If they want it out when they get older that’s their choice. But yes my kids learn about locs just like kids learn about regular hair. It’s all about repetition and communication. My daughter is 15 and has had locs for about 6 years. She wanted them. She hated getting her hair combed. We’re also around a lot of folk with locs especially since her dad is Jamaican. I would personally say for a girl, to let her decide. Even if she starts off with loc n twists, she can change her mind before they loc. I have locs and my daughter (12) just ask to get her hair loc’d for her 13th birthday. I love children with locs, they’re so beautiful. It’s your choice what you choose to do with your child’s hair. We are a loced family (myself, husband and our 6 yr old son) Our daughter is 2 and eventually I’d like to Loc or sister loc her hair but for some reason my husband is totally against it. I honestly think it’s bc he thinks she has “good” soft hair and prefers it to stay the way it is. I hate the idea that he even thinks their is such a thing as “good hair”. For context he was born and raised in Jamaica where the colorism is so real. The lighter you are and nicer your hair the higher class you are. Of course in my mind that is ridiculous but he would never say that’s how he feels, I just know. Our son came out brown with my kinky hair texture and he had no prob with us locing his hair. Our daughter came out lighter with his texture hair. Once she turns 10 she will get to decide what she wants and that’s on that! I reminded him that he met me with my knotty kinky hair and that he thought it was beautiful so why the resistance foe baby girl. He can’t even give a reason smh. All black hair Is beautiful!! I have several different textures throughout my head but my softest/ “nicer hair”, I hate even saying that actually loced the quickest EFF THEM!! I’m loced as well and my mom said the same thing. It pisses me off bc 1. You are only saying that bc you are brainwashed to believing locs is ugly/unclean/unkept/etc. 2. It’s my baby and I can do what the hell I want.
